A monstrous pub landlord raped an eight-year-old girl and held a knife to her throat saying he would kill her if she told anybody.

Carl Marland, 58, groomed several children by buying them expensive gifts such as clothes, money and drugs like cannabis and cocaine.

He then went on to sexually assault the young girls.

The eight-year-old girl was the youngest of his four victims who he sexually assaulted often.

At Manchester Crown Court on May 24, Marland was given a 21-year sentence.

Prosecutor Vanessa Thomson told the court how Marland would travel to Greater Manchester from London to visit girls and carry out attacks on them.

A mum of one of the victims became suspicious of gifts sent to her daughter and found messages from Marland on Snapchat and WhatsApp.

Social services and police were alerted to this and Marland was arrested in January 2022.

When arrested, officers seized a Samsung mobile phone which Marland had used to contact his victims and a ‘Rambo-style’ knife.

When police officers examined images on the phone, they found a cartoon image of Marland in bed with the eight-year-old victim.

Officers uncovered videos Marland had secretly filmed of one victim getting undressed.

Marland attempted to convince officers he was impotent and was not ‘capable of doing the things he was accused of’.

The mum of the youngest child said in a victim statement how her daughter’s self-esteem and talent had been snatched away by Marland.

‘The pain I go through each day knowing I’m unable to take away what she has been through is torturous’, she added.

Marland previously pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual communication with a child, three counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of making indecent photos of a child, three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of voyeurism.

A jury convicted him of a further 11 charges following a trial last year. They were four counts of rape of a child, five counts of sexually assaulting a child, causing a child to watch a sexual act and assault of a child by penetration.

Mitigating, Michael Goldwater told the court that prior to the offences, Marland had lived a ‘perfectly creditable working life’ as a pub landlord.

‘Until this happened no one questioned his behaviour of character in any way,’ said Mr Goldwater. ‘I’m not going to speculate on what made a man of his age behave in the way which the jury found him to have behaved.’
