Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 23 years in prison for sex crimes

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in jail after being convicted of rape and sexual assault.

The 67-year-old disgraced movie mogul was last month found guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping an aspiring actress in 2013 Jessica Mann.

His lawyers had asked Justice James Burke of the New York state Supreme Court to consider his age and ailing health and hand him a five year sentence out of a possible 29 years.

Weinstein, wearing a suit, and the six women who testified against him were in court for the proceedings.

In an emotional statement in court, Ms Haleyi spoke of the trauma she had endured since the attack, saying, "It scarred me deeply, mentally and emotionally, perhaps irreparably, perhaps forever."

Ms Mann also spoke, recalling the moment during the trial when she left the witness box in tears and then could be heard screaming from an adjacent room.

"The day my screams were heard from the witness room was the day my voice came back to its full power," she said.

"Rape is not just one moment of penetration. It is forever."

Weinstein, who has maintained that any sexual activity was consensual, also spoke in court, saying he had fond memories of his accusers.

Looking back during the trial at emails they exchanged, he said, he thought they had a good friendship: "I'm not going to say these aren't great people. I had wonderful times with these people. I'm just genuinely confused. Men are confused about this issue."

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Joan Illuzzi asked Burke to impose 25 years or "near" 25 years in prison for his conviction on a charge of criminal sexual act in the first degree involving Ms Haleyi and to impose a consecutive sentence for the third-degree rape conviction involving Ms Mann.

My view: Harvey Weinstein is not remorseful at all, He doesn't accept that he's done anything wrong. The man is so strange, You made your bed, you can't complain that it's uncomfortable.
