Country singer Kylie Rae Harris caused crash that killed her and teen: sheriff’s office

The Country music singer was speeding, and caused the three-vehicle crash that killed her and a teen driver in northern New Mexico on Wednesday, according to authorities on Friday.

Local sheriff Jerry Hogrefe told the Taos News that, Kylie Rae Harris clipped the car in front of her, then lost control of her Chevrolet Equinox and careened into the path of oncoming traffic,

Her car collided with an SUV driven by 16-year-old Maria Elena Cruz. Harris and the teen, who were both alone in their cars, were pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this time, I will say with most certainty that Miss Cruz was an innocent victim of this senseless crash caused by Ms. Harris,” Sheriff Hogrefe told the newspaper.

Police also believe alcohol played a factor in the crash, but did not provide more details about their investigation. Toxicology tests are still pending.

The newspaper previously reported that Harris had a previous DWI conviction in Texas and had been ordered to install a breathalyzer machine in her car.

The 30-year-old singer had been touring throughout Texas and the southwest this summer, promoting her self-titled album.

According to Saving Country Music which first reported the death, the singer was traveling to perform at the Big Barn Dance in Taos.

Harris tweeted about the trip the day of the fatal crash. “Fuel range is 46 miles and I’m 36 from the nearest gas station. Dear baby Jesus please don’t let me get stranded in NM,” she wrote.

My view: Such a tragic waste of two young lives. Unfortunately Harris reportedly caused the crash that also killed an innocent victim, 16-year-old Maria Cruz and the Taos Sheriff’s Office suspects alcohol played a role in the crash, how sad.
