Iran President calls Donald Trump ‘mentally retarded’ in latest jibe
IRAN’S President Hassan Rouhani has labelled Donald Trump “mentally retarded” – as tensions ratchet between the two countries.
Rouhani said the White House is “afflicted by mental retardation” in his attack on the US President.
It follows American sanctions on top Iranian statesmen, including its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Rouhani responded in a state TV speech: "The White House actions mean it is mentally retarded.
The country’s foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi earlier tweeted: "Imposing fruitless sanctions against Iran's supreme leader and the commander of Iran's diplomacy (Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif) is the permanent closure of the path to diplomacy with the frustrated US administration.”
It comes after Iranian troops brought down a US drone last week.
Tehran claims the UAV and accompanying P-8 Poseidon spy plane had violated the country’s border.

But Washington says it was downed in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf.
Last week, Trump ordered an airstrike against Iran but then made a dramatic u-turn while US bombers were in the air.
He reportedly backed down following advice from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and John Bolton.
