Two burnt to death in tanker fire explosion in Ibadan Nigeria

A tanker laden with petrol on Thursday skidded off and caught fire claiming two lives and burning four vehicles at Iwo road area of Ibadan around 3:00pm.

The police authorities in Oyo State confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Thursday.

According to them, the tanker spilled its content into a nearby intersection while an unconfirmed number of people sustained burns of various degrees.

The accident occurred at Onipepeye area, along Iwo Road in Ibadan, the state capital.

An eyewitness explained that some people rushed to the scene and started scooping fuel from the tanker shortly after it skidded off.

However, an attempt to start a broken-down vehicle nearby was said to have ignited the areas around the spill, causing the tanker to explode, Channelstv reported.

Another eye witness, AbdulAzeez Hammed, said that the tanker which fell and spilled its content, razed no fewer than four vehicles.

Hammed said he saw a man in one of the affected vehicles removing his child from the back of his wife when they saw the fire approaching their vehicle.

The witness said the husband and the child escaped while the fire caught the wife in the car and burnt her to death.

Confirming the incident, SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said that two people lost their lives in the incident, pmnews reported.

Fadeyi said four vehicles and two motorcycles were also burnt.
