WATCH: Eyewitness films dramatic scenes after M1Johannesburg shooting
Two people are recovering in hospital after a shooting on the Jan Smuts offramp of the M1 north highway in Johannesburg.
According to police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo, five suspects opened fire on a man and a woman who were travelling in a BMW X1.
"The motive of the shooting is still unknown and the suspects fled the scene," he said.
Masondo said the suspects had shot the victims with a rifle and a pistol.
He said an investigation was underway and that no arrests had been made.
An eyewitness who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity said, as he approached the offramp, he saw the men shooting at the victims.
"The driver of the car was already lying on the road and the other passenger was trying to run around the car," he said.
The eyewitness said the suspects opened the boot of the vehicle and removed what looked like a bag. They then fled the scene.
