WATCH: Hail of bullets rains down on Sydenham Heights


News24 reports that, A series of shootouts in and around Sydenham Heights, in Sydenham, have thrust the Durban community into the spotlight. Video footage of two shootings has emerged on social media.

One of the incidents happened on Heritage Day.

Captain Nqobile Gwala, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, told News24 police received a complaint of a shooting at Sydenham Heights at 19:45 on Monday, September 24.

"Upon arrival, unknown suspects opened fire at police before fleeing the scene. No injuries or arrests were made," Gwala said.

"The motive for the shooting is unknown. Charges of attempted murder were opened at Sydenham police station for investigation."

Councillor Christopher Pappas, public representative of Ward 31 - which covers parts of Sydenham and Overport, paints a picture of a long unresolved problem in the area.

He told News24 that Sydenham Heights, Matlock Road and Georgehill Road are known drug peddling points.

"Since December 2017 the situation has drastically deteriorated. A turf war has erupted between two groups dealing in drugs, with members from Cape Town being called in to the fight."
