Dad, 42, 'battered to death with cricket bat after confronting youths over stolen bikes'

A man tragically died after allegedly being beaten with a cricket bat by a gang of youths who reportedly stole his children’s bikes.

Derek Whyteside, 42, from Telford, Shropshire, died in hospital after being found unconscious in Withywood Drive, Malinslee, on Monday.

He had allegedly left his home earlier that day in a bid to get back his children’s bicycles.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and appeared before Kidderminster magistrates yesterday.

Police have now reassured residents and extra patrols have continued today in the area, close to where the victim died.

Mr Whyteside’s name was released last night as friends and family paid tribute to him, led by his partner Michelle, with hundreds taking to social media to offer their condolences.

Partner Michelle, 37, said: ‘My whole world has just come crashing round me’, and later added: ‘Lost my love my world at 3.20 this morning. U are my everything no one cud ever replace wot we have. Fly high.

Sleep tight Derek Whyteside.’ The 16-year-old charged with Derek’s murder appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear at Stafford Crown Court at a date to be fixed.

My view: Why not show the teenager's face, the law should be changed, if he's old enough to brutally battered an innocent man to death, then he should be exposed so other teens won't go out and commit murder.
