WAFU Cup: Nigeria through to the semi-final after 2-0 win over Ghana

Nigeria, on Monday, defeated the Black Stars of Ghana 2-0 in their last game of the group to qualify for the semi-final of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup of Nations.

The Eagles finally got their first win of the group games following two successive draws against Mali and Guinea.

The Super Eagles had come into the game with a must-win agenda, knowing fully well that any other outcome could jeopardize their cup race.

Super Eagles Coach Salisu Yusuf made six (6) changes to the starting line-up.

Tony Okpotu, Stephen Eze, Rabiu Ali, Peter Eneji, Ubong Friday and Ikechukwu Ezenwa all featured in the starting eleven (11).

The first half ended goalless with Super Eagles team dominating the first 45 minutes.

The first goal came off NPFL top scorer, Okpotu, in the 54th minute of the game.

Just three minutes later, Plateau United’s Eneji doubled the lead with a well-struck effort.

Ghana came into the game having already secured a slot in the semifinal following two successive wins over Mali and Guinea.

Eneji was voted as the Man of the Match at the end of the game.

Ghana and Nigeria advanced to the semifinals of the tournament from Group A.

In the other game in Group A played simultaneously on Monday, Guinea and Mali canceled each other out in a 1-1 draw at the Nduom Sports Complex to finish on two points each.
