Republican candidate Greg Gianforte in a contested special House election in Montana was charged with assaulting a journalist on Wednesday at his final rally in Bozeman on the eve of the vote. Police officers were called to the event and the reporter was sent to the hospital for X-rays.

In a written statement on Wednesday, Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said there was enough evidence to charge the candidate, Greg Gianforte after the attack on reporter Ben Jacobs of The Guardian, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Gianforte would face a maximum $500 fine or 6 months in jail if convicted. The statement added that Jacobs‘ injuries did not meet the legal definition of felony assault.

Mr. Jacobs, who is a reporter for The Guardian newspaper, can be heard on the audio loudly that Mr. Gianforte, who is running against Democrat Rob Quist, attacked him hours before voters went to the polls in Montana.

“Greg Gianforte just body slammed me and broke my glasses,” Mr. Jacobs charged on Twitter from Bozeman, Montana.

Ben Jacobs, said he had been asking Gianforte about the Republican healthcare plan when the candidate "body slammed" him and began shouting, "Get the hell out of here."

"He took me to the ground," Jacobs told his paper. "This is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me in reporting on politics."

It is reported that Mr. Jacobs‘ statement was confirmed by multiple eyewitnesses, including a Fox News crew setting up an interview with Mr. Gianforte when the incident occurred.

Fox News: Reporter didn't show physical aggression

Late Wednesday, Fox News correspondent Alicia Acuna reported that she and her crew witnessed the incident and saw Gianforte grab Jacobs "by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him."

Acuna wrote, "To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte."

Before the GOP candidate was charged, Gianforte's campaign blamed the altercation on Jacobs' "aggressive behavior," and offered their own version of events that makes no sense with the audio recording and witnesses.

"Tonight, as Greg was giving a separate interview in a private office, The Guardian's Ben Jacobs entered the office without permission, aggressively shoved a recorder in Greg's face, and began asking badgering questions," the campaign said.

"Jacobs was asked to leave. After asking Jacobs to lower the recorder, Jacobs declined. Greg then attempted to grab the phone that was pushed in his face. Jacobs grabbed Greg's wrist, and spun away from Greg, pushing them both to the ground. It's unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ."

Mr. Gianforte, the Republican candidate for the state’s lone House seat, is scheduled to appear in court before June 7.

My opinion: This aggressive politician should be expelled from the party, What are the Republicans waiting for.? Just listen to the audio, it's very scary.
