Matt winner of the X Factor 2016

"Thank you so much everybody," Matt said as he won.

"You came into this final as good artists, you ended as great artists.," said Simon Cowell.

"What I promise you Matt, we will give you one hundred percent, you deserve this opportunity."

"I'm just so happy for Matt, I love you," said Saara just before Matt was sent onto the stage to perform the winner's single which was written by Ed Sheeran.

The winner's song, When Christmas Comes Around, is a holiday themed ballad and was co-written by Amy Wadge just two weeks ago before being sent to Simon Cowell for consideration.

Matt Terry has been crowned winner of The X Factor 2016 following Sunday night's final.

Bromley-born Matt was left astounded as he discovered he had beat out competition from fellow hopeful Saara Aalto, 29, after the duo battled it out in the live show in Wembley Arena.

Mentored by Nicole Scherzinger, the 23-year-old won in the show's 13th series after which he belted out the winner's single Christmas Comes Around, written by Ed Sheeran. He is the eighth solo male

After host Dermot O'Leary announced the news that he had won, Matt's reaction was so theatrical that he collapsed to the floor shortly before scooping his mentor into his arms.

The show's chief judge, Simon Cowell praised the rising star for his win as he said: 'Matt it's your night, it's an important record you know that' - a comment which could allude to his status as a male winner.
