Head-on Train Smash Horror That Killed 27 And Left Many Injured Yesterday, In Italy

A firefighter can be seen in the picture assisting in the rescue. A make shift hospital was set up in a nearby field yesterday.

It is reported that investigation into yesterday's crash will focus on the antiquated phone alert system used to warn station masters of trains travelling on shared single tracks.

Pope Francis sent a message to the archbishop of Bari, Monsignor Francnesco Cacucci, he said he shared in the pain of so many families. He said he mourn those who died and he's praying for the injured to recover soon.

Both trains pictured above collided as they were travelling in opposite directions on a single track

Passengers were today reportedly describing how they were thrown forward violently on impact and trying to free themselves from the tangle of metal, they said there were body parts and debris everywhere.
