12-year-old Boy dies after car he was driving crashes into lorry

A schoolboy has been killed in a car crash in Ireland.


The boy, 12, was driving when he collided with a lorry in Limerick in the early hours of Friday.


Emergency services were called to the N21 at Rineroe near Adare shortly before 2am and the boy was confirmed dead at the scene.


His body was transferred to University Hospital Limerick.

Gardai (Irish Police) said the coroner was notified.


The lorry driver, a man in his 40s, did not need hospital treatment.


Gardai added the scene had been sealed for examination by forensic collision investigators and diversions were in place on the N21.

A Garda spokeswoman said: ‘Shortly before 2am, Gardaí and Emergency Services were alerted following a collision between a car and a lorry on the N21 at Rineroe near Adare.


‘The driver of the car, a male juvenile, was fatally injured.


‘He was the sole occupant of the car. His body has since been removed to the morgue at University Hospital Limerick.

‘The coroner has been notified.


‘The driver of the lorry, a man in his 40s, did not require hospital treatment.’


Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling on the N21 near Adare at the time have been asked to make the footage available.
